Cender said Berkowitz, who killed his victims with a .44-caliber
magnum pistol, has begun to call himself the Son of Hope.
Cender said he believes Berkowitz's claim that he has Found
God is a HOAX!
He calls Berkowitz a friend but does not want to see the killer
back on the streets again. He relates that David Berkowitz is so smart that he can make people think what he wants them to.
A few Christian groups have gotten behind Berkowitz and some have even said that Berkowitz should be pardoned!
David Berkowitz should not be back on the street is a statement
that Cender continuously repeats and warns anyone who will listen. He held the entire City of New York in terror. Can
you even begin to imagine anyone holding an enture major city in that magnitude of fear?
In 1984, some of David Berkowitz's fellow inmates hatched a
plot to draw macabre paintings and have Berkowitz to sign them. Cender says that he was able to convince the infamous former
Son of Sam not to sign the paintings but to write poems, short stories and essays.
After his release, Stephen Cender stayed in touch with Berkowitz
and the two often traded other items for the writings, rather than pay cash for them. Now he has a folder filled with
stories written and signed by Berkowitz.
Sometimes David Berkowitz would say that he needed a softball
glove or something and Cender would get it for him, at his own expense, so the writings of David Berkowitz were not given
to him out of the goodness of the convicted serial killer's heart.
An overview of the writings of David Berkowitz, as assessed by Stephen Cender, are
described as deep, dark and filled with the metaphor of a man depicted as extremely intelligent, capable of humiliating fellow
inmates with his gamesmanship at Scrabble, and trying to change the way the general public sees him.
We were real friends, but it's extremely hard to describe our unique relationship,
Cender once remarked. In the nine years I knew David, he never talked about the Son of Sam case.
When discussing a book written about David Berkowitz as the infamous Son of Sam,
The Ultimate Evil (by Maury Terry), Stephen takes great exception with some of the aspects of that book, based on his relationship
with Berkowitz.
In the book, the author theorizes that multiple murderers committed all of the killings
for which David was charged with, but Cender refutes that theory, stating that the man (David Berkowitz) acted alone in his
murders and should never be allowed on the streets ever again.
Cender also refutes a part of that book, claiming that people within the prison system
helped berkowitz file legal papers, when he knows, without a doubt, that David Berkowitz has NEVER, during his 22 years of
incarceration, ever filed a legal paper.
Stephen Cender has compiled the writings of David Berkowitz and has included his
own in-depth commentary in a published work titled:
